5 things you can do right now to speak up about Gaza
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The genocide in Gaza is horrifying. The footage is unwatchable. The silence from people in power is deafening. And if you care—really care—you might also be feeling helpless.
But you are not powerless.
You don’t need to be an expert to speak up. You don’t need to be Palestinian to take action. You simply need to refuse to look away…and then harness that discomfort and do something with it.
So here are five things you can do right now to speak up about Gaza, wherever you are, whatever your capacity.
1. Say the word “Genocide”. Out loud. Publicly.
Language matters. The word “conflict” or “war” erases power dynamics. The phrase “complicated situation” lets oppressors off the hook. What’s happening in Gaza is a genocide and we need to name it clearly and unapologetically.
So:
Post it.
Say it.
Write it to your MP.
Correct people when they avoid it.
Saying “genocide” isn’t extreme. What’s extreme is the pin-drop silence while children are starved, bombed, and buried under rubble.
It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being clear. And Brene Brown (ironically mentioning her) says clear is kind, right?
2. Contact your MP (Again. And again.)
Your MP might not be listening, but they still need to hear you.
Whether they’ve signed ceasefire motions or parroted government lines, they work for you. So:
Use WriteToThem or TheyWorkForYou to find out their record.
Demand an immediate, permanent ceasefire.
Ask them to support arms embargoes and sanctions on Israel.
Remind them that history will remember where they stood.
Organise a letter-writing session with friends. Make it communal. Rage together, then act together. If you need me to facilitate a sesh, using my zoom, just say the word!
3. Divest, Boycott, and make it known
Your money speaks, even when you don’t feel you can.
Divest from companies and institutions complicit in occupation and apartheid. This includes banks, retailers, and weapons manufacturers. Check out:
Bank.Green to see if your bank invests in arms. Swap accounts if you’re with Barclays (mega cunts).
Join Palestine Solidarity Campaign’s Don’t Buy Apartheid and find out which companies to avoid.
Download the No Thanks app for when you do your shopping.
And don’t stop at personal choices. Email your workplace, school, or union. Ask them to divest too.
4. Turn up. In the flesh. With your feet and your voice.
Online action matters, but so does showing up. (If you’re able-bodied and well, financially stable and can access childcare or bring your kids along, I’m looking at you! If you’ve not got capacity right now due to any of the above or otherwise, you do what you can from where you’re at. There’s no judgement here!)
If you’re able to:
Join a local protest or march.
Sign petitions, yes, but also be seen - gather a few mates and hit the high street with your clipboards and gather more signatures!
Find a Palestine solidarity group near you.
Bring a friend, bring your banner, bring your outrage.
Search: “Free Palestine + [your city]” on Instagram or Facebook to find events and organisers. Don’t wait for an invite.
And if you can’t get to a protest: hang a banner. Chalk your street. Put signs in your window. Remind your community that silence is complicity.
5. Talk about it. Even when it’s uncomfortable. Especially then, actually.
Your silence is someone else’s shield. It protects the people who want this to be forgotten.
So talk about it:
In the WhatsApp group.
At your next work meeting.
With your family, even if they vote Tory or read the Telegraph.
You don’t have to have all the answers. You do have to stop pretending politics isn’t personal.
You can say: “I’m really struggling with what’s happening in Gaza. I think it’s important we talk about it.”
Or:
“I don’t know everything, but I know kids are being killed and that’s not a ‘complicated issue’ that’s an abomination.”
Use your voice. Use your face. Use your name.
You’re not too late. But time is running out.
Every day we delay is another day of bloodshed. Another Iznotreali politician spouting genocidal rhetoric - the final solution N@zi stuff. Zionists spreading hatred online and screaming violence at peaceful pro-Pal protests.
You don’t need to be brave - brave is what the Gazan people are. You need to be unwilling to let this happen quietly.
So start here. Pick one thing. Then do the next thing.
And when people ask, “Why are you still talking about Gaza?”—tell them, Because they’re still bombing Gaza. They’re shooting starving civilians in the head.
